I just read this story about a child with a married lesbian mother who was asked to be president of something at his catholic school. They were well aware of her orientation and choices when she stepped up as president, but since she actively participated in the "No on Prop 8" campaign she was asked to resign as president.
Here's a quote from the article:
"McGehee says that the principal asked her to keep Sebastian at the school but she and Kathy decided to pull him out. "I could not be the type of parent to drop my kid off and not be involved with his school and I could not believe that the school would be satisfied with that type of parenting," McGehee says.
I can understand McGehee here. I'm with her on the idea of her not wanting to support this type of school who are more than okay to encourage a parent to not be involved in their child's education and the school that she pays a great deal of money to have him there. I think that the article claims that her son is the "casualty" here is false. It's not about her son. She could have him in that type of school and be fine, many parents do. Its not about him, its about her. So using this type of headline is just a heart-string type of thing to do, which isn't necessary, in my opinion.
There is, however, still a problem here but I can't quite put my finger on it. It feels unlawful to fire someone over protesting. Isn't that freedom of speech? Why would one ever get fired (or asked to resign, whatever) over it. Does it make it okay just because its a church-ran school?
If our entire nation has all of these rules, rights, and ethics and everyone must follow them EXCEPT for churches, I have a hard time believing that ANYONE has rules, rights, and ethics... really. It's really questioning my entire view on our justice and legislature system (which probably means there's something completely inconsistent about our executive system too).
I don't know, thoughts?
